Teaching Philosophy

The foundation of good teaching stems from hearing student voices.

From my studies and experiences in the classroom, it is evident to me that teaching is about giving the students a voice. Children surrounded by an encouraging and open environment are taught that their thoughts and feelings matter. Once they are open to communicating, it is vital to listen to what they are saying. Teachers are not immune to mistakes, so to keep an open mind and grow as an educator with students will only garner more of their respect and trust. In my current student teaching placement, I have made it clear to the students they can talk to me and ask me questions at any appropriate time. I have also incorporated a “question box” where students can put a slip of paper with their comment or question in a box on my desk if they do not feel comfortable saying it in person. Having this honest connection with the class will inevitably lead to more motivation and a better understanding of what they need to learn effectively. Meaningful student involvement makes for better active citizens in the future.
